CAPREA Sustainable Solutions is a young SME in Belgium, founded in January 2016. The company has two divisions: one part focused on garden design (managed by Sara Verbeiren), and a second part focused on consultancy related to the biobased economy and renewable energy (managed by Luc Pelkmans). https://www.caprea.be/

The consultancy department builds on the international experienced gained by Luc Pelkmans in the past 20 years (mostly at the Belgian research institute VITO), in the area of biofuels, bioenergy and biobased economy. The mission of CAPREA Sustainable Solutions is to facilitate the transition to a more sustainable energy system, based on renewable resources which is necessary to achieve the goals of the Paris Climate Agreement, as well as the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Our generation is in the driver’s seat to move this transition!

An important assignment has been the function of technical coordinator of IEA Bioenergy, which is an international collaboration between 25 countries, with a vision to achieve a substantial contribution of sustainable bioenergy in the future global energy mix. The organisation brings together national experts from research, government and industry to work together on different bioenergy related topics, ranging from technology solutions and their market deployment, mobilisation of biomass feedstocks, to governance of the sustainability of biomass value chains. Luc Pelkmans carries out the function of technical coordinator since 2016, and this assignment has recently been prolonged to end 2021.

Specific topics of expertise offered through CAPREA Sustainable Solutions:

  • Policy and market analysis in relation to biofuels, bioenergy and other applications of biomass

  • Feasibility studies related to local/regional applications of biomass for energy or in industry

  • Stakeholder consultations, including organisation of workshops
